Maybe you missed Slava Tsukerman’s Liquid Sky the first time it came around? Androgynous models, dope deals, UFOs and killer orgasms made this 1982 film an instant cult classic — and the IFC Center is bringing it back to the big screen as part of the ongoing series, Queer/Art/Film. Co-curated by Adam Baran and filmmaker Ira Sachs, every month a different gay artist is invited to share the film that most shaped their vision.

This month, New York staple Slava Mogutin will be presenting Liquid Sky, a film that inspired him and an entire generation of artists. Like director Tsukerman, Mogutin hails from Mother Russia, however, his outspoken writings and activism (not to mention his attempt to marry his partner in 1994) forced him into exile. More than a decade before Putin’s anti-gay propaganda law, he was the first to be granted political asylum in the United States on the grounds of homosexual persecution. His writings, photography and multimedia art have been showcased in museums, galleries and publications across the world.

Mogutin will introduce Liguid Sky on Monday, October 27th. The screening will be followed by drinks and discussion at the city’s oldest gay bar, Julius.

Queen of Facebook rage and former hardcore rapper Hamm Samwich is giving you Tori moments on August 27th at Lecture + Demo: Citizen Samwich. Hamm is famous for being angry and smart as f***k and dominating the Brooklyn drag scene, but tonight shit is gonna get intimate. She’ll be playing selections from her upcoming electronic album “Citizen Samwich” with those gorgeous Ars Nova acoustics.

Expect surprise covers, appearances from comedians John Early and Jacqueline Novak and your girl Charlene. Hamm’s brazen intellect will be on full display, with a Q&A and plenty of room for rants. Hamm is a musical force and we’re excited to see her in a venue where we can actually hear the bitch.

Sisters of the Wicked Wig is a new documentary that explores the current “drag renaissance happening in Brooklyn, New York.” The doco features “Horrorchata, Merrie Cherry, Elle Emenopé and their sisters of the House of Bushwig as they explore the meaning of life, love, family, art and what it means to be a drag queen in today’s world.”

With TV shows like Rupaul’s Drag Race and…well, really just Drag Race, (on TV at least) it does feel like Drag is having a moment. From our perspective that moment appears to playing out in Brooklyn. We’re glad filmmakers Adam Golub and Gayatri Kaul have taken the time to document all that’s going on in the wonderful world of drag.

I’ve always thought that drag queens (and of course trans people, but that’s a whole other story) are the bravest of the LGBTQI community. Putting on a dress as a man and walking out of the house is a defiant, big-balled move that deserves all our respect. It looks like The Sisters of the Wicked Wig is attempting to do just that.
