Launch of the new zine: THROUGH

A publication by the artist Quito Ziegler

Most people have trouble getting back into a working mindset after facing stressful life changes. That being said, most people aren’t Quito Ziegler. In 2011 alone, the Brooklyn-based artist came out as trans, confronted childhood traumas, and went on a road trip in a white van named the Trojan Pony, using the time away from New York to work on queer art installations in locations varying from Vermont to Berlin. Since returning to Brooklyn, Ziegler has assembled a new photography show, ‘Queen of Hearts,’ currently on view at the Bureau of General Services-Queer Division. The show, hand-crafted by Ziegler, captures various queer artist friends “in nightclubs and fire escapes of Brooklyn before dawn,” exploring a dreamlike, alluring underworld filtered through Ziegler’s grainy lens.

To coincide with the exhibition, the BGSQD is hosting a launch party for a new zine Ziegler has put together this Thursday, December 19th. The zine, titled THROUGH “A Tranifesto About My Gender,” discusses queer interdependence, transphobia, physical transition, and “DIY recovery strategies,” all branching from Ziegler’s time spent on an actual road to recovery two years ago. Ziegler will be reading from the zine (which will also be available to purchase), and there is a planned after-party at Hanks Saloon for drinks and dancing afterward, featuring an assorted group of local queercore bands. What’s a better way to spend a pre-Christmas Thursday night than that?
