Joey LaBeija – “unavailable”

Let's sing about being dumb bitches

Why am I such a silly ho? This question has haunted — shook and motivated — me since I listened to Joey LaBeija’s “unavailable.” This new track is the first single from his upcoming EP, Enemies of Progress, LaBeija’s first release with label Mad Decent. The project, named after a party thrown by Mischa Mafia, is a soundscape carved from the nightlives of New York, Kansas City, and London. It also carries influences from Duke Dumont and Green Velvet; LaBeija’s upbringing as a Puerto Rican-Italian from the Bronx; and his past as a DJ. In short: it slaps. Both cheeks. It slaps cross-genre, from reggaeton to Baltimore Club. And the video for “unavailable,” centered on LaBeija’s impossible cute/fine balance, slaps before ending with a cuddle.

Which brings us back to our main question: Why am I such a fuckin’ silly ho? Is it because LaBeija has done linguistic witchcraft in his chorus by rhyming “fuckin’ silly ho” with “unavailable”? Or is that his voice is pitch-shifted so low he sounds less like the monster under my bed, and more like the one in my old closet? (Scary at first, then not, then the gravel driveway voice eventually a comfort). Maybe it’s the beat, which could make a silly ho of the most serious gatheredt amongst us. Whatever the case, I’m happy to move along.

When asked what motivates the song, LeBeija said, “I just wanna be relatable. Not like, the voice of a generation and that corny shit. But like, we’re all dumb bitches — why hasn’t anybody made a song about it? We’ve all been in a situation where we’ve obsessed over some asshole that wants nothing to do with us, but we keep going back to him when he’s bored and horny. Why hasn’t anybody made a song about loving being that person? Because you do love it. You love it, because you call your girlfriends the next day addicted to the drama. So let’s fuckin’ enjoy it. Let’s sing about being dumb bitches.” Salud.
