Event: Brooklyn Nightlife Awards

Last year Abi and I were nominated, and we also presented, at the first Brooklyn Nightlife Awards. We didn’t win the award for best nightlife publication (some trashy street mag did) but we still had a lot of fun. The event was a total cluster fuck...in a good way (we presented and somehow thought it would be a good idea to drop our pants halfway through, pictured). The awards celebrate all facets of nightlife in the BK, from best bar, to best performer, to best drag queen, and drag king. As Merrie Cherry (who created the awards) says, it’s a night to toast all the “freaks and other amazing people that make Brooklyn nightlife pop.” This year the awards are stepping it up, moving to a bigger space at Radio Bushwick. Along with us you can expect a long list of presenters: everyone from Earl Dax to Paisley Dalton to Murray Hill to Untitled Queen. There’s also going to be performances by Thorgy Thor, Haus of Sweat, Darlinda Just Darlinda, Hamm Samwich, Mocha Lite and many more. Dress up, dress down, don’t dress at all, there’s nothing boring about the BNAs, that’s for damn sure.

$10, 9:00PM, Radio Bushwick, 22 Wyckoff Ave. Brooklyn, NY.

House of O: A supper Club

Join us on February 10th for dinner, performances and a party!

We visited the House of O: A Supper Club a couple weeks ago and we had a blast. The event created by Sloan Morgan features “the most expensive body on earth,” Amanda Lepore and “MC and Icon” Paul Alexander along with a rotating group of NYC personalities each week — It’s a sit down dinner that starts at 9:00PM, that’s then followed by performances in the basement, and a late night party afterwards.

For this week’s event we are guest hosting the event along with the incredible performance artist Kembra Pfahler, the “original queen of the downtown NYC sound,” Anita Sarko, the designer Norisol Ferrari, the “bold burlesque” Mss Vee and many others. We can’t think of a better way to start your week. Call 212.274.9898 to book a table + click here for more info.

9:00PM-2:00AM, Maison O, 98 Kenmare St. NY, NY.

Postcards From The Edge

A benefit for Visual Aids

As New Yorkers we all remember hearing about Banksy secretly selling his artworks in Central Park last October for $60 a pop. Some idiot bought four and the next day had them valued at like $150,000. Suddenly every damn person in this city had a story about how they were so close to being in the park that day and definitely would have bought 10 pieces. WHATEVER.

Well this time we’re giving you the heads up. It’s not Banksy in the park—it’s the annual Postcards From The Edge benefit, where hundreds of original artworks are exhibited anonymously. Each artist’s identity is revealed only after you purchase the piece, and with works by famous painters, designers and exciting up-and-comers, you could score an impressive new artwork for your collection.

At $85 a pop, the best part is that each artwork will cost you less than a night out. The funds all go to help Visual AIDS, an organization that supports artists living with HIV/AIDS. So rather than waking up with a hangover and embarrassing memories, spend your dollars on something beautiful, helpful and potentially very valuable.

Luhring Augustine Gallery, 531 W. 24th St. NY, NY.
Friday 24 January – 6:00PM to 8:00PM (Preview Party)
Saturday 25 January – 10:00AM to 6:00PM
Sunday 26 January – 12:00PM to 4:00PM …

Event: The Brooklyn Sets

This event sounds just lovely. It’s a night of dancing and performance hosted by Ana Matronic (of the Scissor Sisters) to benefit the Hetrick-Martin Institute which provides “empowerment, education, and advocacy for LGBTQ youth in New York and New Jersey.” I know we’ve come a long way in terms of gay rights, but it still sucks balls (if you’re lucky, zing!) growing up queer. Especially since a lot of straight kids are total fuck heads. Recently I read a story about a new game they’re playing in which they run up to a stranger with the goal of hitting them so hard it will knock them out. Jesus, just masturbate in your room to Internet porn like a normal kid. Anyways back to the benefit. Along with Ana Matronic as host there will be live sets by JD Samson & MEN and Bright Light Bright LightJonjon Battles will be djing in between. Tickets are $30 bucks, which is a tad pricey, but obvs it’s for a good cause, so suck it up. Your 13-year-old self will thank you. Get a ticket here.

$30, 9:00PM, littlefield, 622 Degraw St. Brooklyn, NY.

Event: One Step Beyond

We last went to the Museum of Natural History for the premier of their current planetarium show, ‘Dark Universe,’ I may have mentioned in that write up that it’s one of my favorite places to visit after a big night. There’s just something very comforting, and relaxing about wandering around its dark expansive rooms filled with displays of natural environments and wildlife from all over the world. This Friday night is your chance to flip things around and have a big night at the museum. DJs Kevin Graves, The Juan Maclean and Jacques Greene will all be performing within the beautiful and spacious Rose Center for Earth and Space. One Step Beyond has been happening for the last 7 years and has been lauded with praise from everyone and their mother. It’s a really special space for a party, and it’s very cool of the museum to open up their doors for the event. We’re told that tickets will be selling out fast so get off your wintery arse and pick one up. It very likely might be the night of your life, and if you’re feeling a little worse for wear the next day, just head back to the museum. The Hall of North American Forests always makes me feel better.

$25/$35, 9:00PM, American Museum of Natural History, Central Park West. NY, NY.

Launch of the new zine: THROUGH

A publication by the artist Quito Ziegler

Most people have trouble getting back into a working mindset after facing stressful life changes. That being said, most people aren’t Quito Ziegler. In 2011 alone, the Brooklyn-based artist came out as trans, confronted childhood traumas, and went on a road trip in a white van named the Trojan Pony, using the time away from New York to work on queer art installations in locations varying from Vermont to Berlin. Since returning to Brooklyn, Ziegler has assembled a new photography show, ‘Queen of Hearts,’ currently on view at the Bureau of General Services-Queer Division. The show, hand-crafted by Ziegler, captures various queer artist friends “in nightclubs and fire escapes of Brooklyn before dawn,” exploring a dreamlike, alluring underworld filtered through Ziegler’s grainy lens.

To coincide with the exhibition, the BGSQD is hosting a launch party for a new zine Ziegler has put together this Thursday, December 19th. The zine, titled THROUGH “A Tranifesto About My Gender,” discusses queer interdependence, transphobia, physical transition, and “DIY recovery strategies,” all branching from Ziegler’s time spent on an actual road to recovery two years ago. Ziegler will be reading from the zine (which will also be available to purchase), and there is a planned after-party at Hanks Saloon for drinks and dancing afterward, featuring an assorted group of local queercore bands. What’s a better way to spend a pre-Christmas Thursday night than that?

FREE, Reading is at 7:00PM, BGSQD, 83A Hester St. NY, NY. …

Event: Dark Universe

In case you couldn’t tell from that time I wrote an in depth post about lactobacillus rhamnosus probiotics, I’m a bit of a nerd. Which is why I was super excited to get invited to the premier screening of the new American Museum of Natural History, Hayden Planetarium show: Dark Universe. The planetarium has had a bunch of interesting talent narrate past films (Whoopi Goldberg, Robert Redford) and this show is no different. Astrophysicist and prolific science communicator Neil deGrasse Tyson takes the viewer on a journey through our universe exploring the after effects of the Big Bang, and the phenomenon of dark energy and dark matter. The visuals (by Carter Emmart, the Museum’s director of astrovisualization) are really mindblowing. While not in 3D, when projected onto the dome ceiling the visuals give the viewer the sensation of flying through the stars. The sound is so good, at some points it literally shook my seat. We didn’t plan ahead when we went to the screening last week, but FYI this show would obvs be even more awesome stoned. Either way it’s a blast.

$27, SHOWS FROM 11:00AM-4:00PM, American Museum of Natural History, Central Park West at 79th St. NY, NY.
