Justin Shoulder debuts in NYC
The artist show us how he transforms into V
Justin Shoulder is a performance artist based in Sydney, Australia. Gerard Garvey (the photographer of this feature) and I spent some time with Justin and his composer Nick Wales at their super swanky, though temporary, Tribeca home. We were lucky enough to see Justin dressed up in a pink body suit and gloves; we were also lucky enough to see Justin dressed down — I point this out only due to his exquisite chest tattoo. We talked about Luigi Serafini’s Codex Seraphinianus, the idea of replacing the canned laughter that we hear on sitcoms with stereotypical gay verbal compulsions (werk!), sperm donations, and the absurd broadness of the word “fashion” in New York City, among other things. Though most importantly I was lucky enough to pick his brain with many curious questions regarding his art practice.
Justin Shoulder is an extremely talented artist and luckily for you he’ll be preforming his magical performance V at Pussy Faggot on September 12th, his New York debut. Be there.
Hello Justin Shoulder, Do you consider yourself a performance artist? Hi Thomas. I am a performance artist wrapped in a shiny film of entertainment sweetness. I’m interested in sharing my stories in the club, the theatre, still and moving image.
Where did you grow up, where do you live? I’m from the northern beaches of Sydney, Australia. From suburban greenery I moved to Summer Hill in the Inner West of Sydney where I am based today.
Did you go to university, what did you study? …

Summer of Love
FringeNYC premieres a queer summer romance
Peninsula is the newest collaboration between playwright Nathan Wright and director Nadia Foskolou. The duo met in graduate school at Columbia University in 2005 and have made lots of beautiful theater together ever since.
The play will have its world premiere at New York’s annual Fringe Festival, which has occupied nearly 20 theaters across downtown Manhattan since the beginning of August. Peninsula is an unconventional bildungsroman (a coming-of-age story) set in different periods of time and geographical locations. It is the story of Tiago, a young man who escapes the slums of Rio de Janeiro to work on a vineyard in Northern Michigan. Though Tiago abandons his home in South America for a new life, the temptation, danger and desire that forced him to leave only reappear in new forms in America.
Peninsula features a bold and brilliant young cast of six: Angela Atwood, Vanessa Bartlett, John Zdrojeski, Josué Gutierrez Guerra, Kellan Peavy, and Marc Sinoway. Each character commands the stage with tremendous presence. The content is heavy, but Wright’s poetic and vividly illustrious language keeps the audience afloat for the entire 90 minutes of the performance.
How did you create the concept for this play?
Nathan: It started as a writing exercise in my first semester of grad school at Columbia. The assignment was to take a photo of a face we knew nothing about and use to it to create a story from that person’s perspective. The photo I chose was from National Geographic and pictured a man from Brazil. …

Tyler Ashley: Full Monty (NSFW)
The dancer and performance artist Tyler Ashley first came to our attention when we hosted the Fire Island Pines Performance Series benefit at the Elizabeth Street Garden. Tyler performed an amazing piece in front of the celeb packed crowd, that involved him moving around a dance space, naked, in a clear plastic skirt. I think I got a better view of his asshole than I’ve ever seen of my own. After that performance we just knew we had to include him in our Pride Party at the Wythe Hotel. We’re so glad we did. While it was a shorter piece (drunk people aren’t the best audience for performance art) it was just as powerful.
We interviewed the performer and our friend, the talented photographer Renee Cox took some lovely images, enjoy.
Did you go to dance school? No. Well, kind of. Growing up I studied voice and did musical theater. And I played a lot of sports. There wasn’t a dance school in or anywhere near my small hometown. It wasn’t until I took my first official dance class in college that I finally found the perfect balance between performance and athleticism. I graduated with a minor in dance. And another in photography.
When did you start dancing? That first dance class in college was in 2004. I was 19. I look exactly the same now — I promise…
Are you still dancing with Elizabeth Streb? I am! I’m not a full time company member, but dance in specific pieces on a project basis. …
