How was Mr. Mickey the clothing brand born? I’ve been friends for decades with Mark Bozek, founder of Live Rocket. He was an executive at QVC and CEO of HSN. The role Bradley Cooper played in Joy is based on Mark. I’ve always been obsessed with TV shopping since I was a kid, and Mark would send me packages through the years with things like Suzanne Somers pajamas that I would wear to the office. He also gave me gossip about all my favorite hosts and celebrities, like Connie Stevens and Susan Lucci. When he was starting Live Rocket, he asked me if I would want to create any products and I said, “Mr Mickey. Put a little sparkle in your life.”
What is your favorite item from the collection? I might have to say the sparkle kimono which is funny because when Flo, the head merchant of Live Rocket suggested we do a kimono, I said kimonos were disgusting and made you look like you were wearing a bathrobe. I said we needed a cardigan instead. We ended up doing both and the kimono was the first thing to sell out. So, I don’t know what I’m talking about. I also love the paparazzi print which is all photos of me through the years by my friend Patrick McMullan. My moon is in Leo so I can be very self-absorbed. But really my favorite thing is collaborating with old friends.
Who’s the biggest bitch in the fashion business? Abi from GAYLETTER is a total bitch. But seriously, after 30 years in fashion, I feel a sentimental attachment to all the crazy characters in this business. Even the bitches and lunatics.
Who have you met in the fashion world who surprised you the most? Donatella Versace and Karl Lagerfeld were two people who always made me so starstruck. Each time I saw them I couldn’t believe they were real. And talking to them was so fabulous. Also, Marc Jacobs is so sweet and real. It’s always surprising to meet someone who’s a superstar who’s so sweet.
Who would you most like to see wearing the collection? If anyone on a daytime soap opera wore Mr Mickey, my brain would explode. I’m such a lifelong soap addict. I was honestly more excited to meet Susan Lucci from All My Children than I was meeting Madonna or Lady Gaga.
Have you always loved sparkly clothing? Absolutely. I blame Bob Mackie. Watching Carol Burnett and Cher as a kid made me obsessed with Las Vegas style glamour and sparkle.
Who / what inspired this collection? I really just wanted to do fun stuff I love. It’s all about easy American sportswear shapes like shorts or polo shirts but in sparkle fabrics or fun prints.
Where were you when you came up with your tag line for the collection? (Mr. Mickey — Put a Little Sparkle Into Your Life). Honestly it just came out when Mark asked if I was interested in doing any products with Live Rocket. We all really need more sparkle in our lives especially after all we’ve been through these past few years.
What’s the starting price point for the collection, and what’s the most expensive? A t-shirt is $34.50 and the sparkle kimono and sparkle joggers are each $125. So it’s an accessible price point.
Where are you happiest? On a road trip driving through the European countryside with friends or on a plane to India.
What’s sexy to you? Confidence. A person who totally embraces who he is.
Who’s your favorite home shopping host? On QVC I miss Lisa Robertson, who is a former Miss Tennessee. I love Leah Williams and, of course, David Venable from In the Kitchen with David. On HSN I’m all about Colleen Lopez. And Live Rocket plans to do TV sales in 2022 in which case, I’ll become my favorite home shopping host!
Should we expect another drop of the collection? Our holiday drop will be out in November featuring a super fun collaboration with one of my favorite artists.
