Printed Matter celebrated the opening of their new home

The new location is at 231 11th Avenue

Thursday 10.15.15

Event: Printed Matter Opening Party at 231 11th Ave.

Printed Matter, the non-profit behind the L.A. and New York Art Book Fairs (which we had a wonderful time at last month) are packing up shop and moving into a fancy new space up the street from their current digs on 11th Ave. The organization, in case you don’t know (what’s wrong with you?!) was founded in 1976 by artists Sol Lewitt, Lucy Lippard, and friends, and specializes in artists’ books and publications. They have thousands upon thousands of publications to browse through. Since they doubled their staff to 10 over the last year they needed a bigger space. Their new two story location, which doubles their previous square footage, provides them (according to the New York Observer) “with a dedicated flexible space for exhibitions and public programs, an upper level wrap-around balcony and reading room accessible by staircase, and an expanded office area.” This Thursday, October 15th, they are hosting a party, open to the public, to celebrate their new home. Come have a drink, check out the new digs and buy some printed matter for god’s sake!

FREE, 6:00PM-8:00PM, Printed Matter, Inc., 231 11th Ave. New York, NY.

The 25th anniversary of the House of Infiniti at BB Kings

Listen: RuPaul What’s the Tee? Podcast

If you’ve been a reader of the newsletter for any amount of time you’ll know that I love a good podcast. In fact I’m listening to one as I type this. It’s the New York Review of Books podcast featuring a conversation with Barack Obama. It’s an interesting listen, but a little sleepy, which is why I want to tell you about another podcast that’ll wake you right up. RuPaul What’s the Tee? is exactly what it sounds like. It’s hosted by Ru and fellow Drag Race judge Michelle Visage. The two spend equal time kiking with each other (my favorite part) as they do interviewing random celebrities (Leah Remini, Big Freedia, Mary Lambert) and of course plenty of drag queens. Over the last 40 episodes they have sat down with all the best queens from the last 7 seasons of Drag Race. It’s clear that Ru and Michelle have known each other FOREVER as they have great chemistry. This connection is ultimately what makes the podcast so enjoyable, it’s like listening in on two old friends gossiping about everything and nothing. It’s totally addictive hunty. Download that shit ASAP. No, no, no, #shedonealreadydonehadherses

Available through itunes and all podcast apps.

Jack Pierson’s Tomorrow’s Man 3

If you’ve heard us mention Tomorrow’s Man before, it’s because every issue is worth mentioning. Jack Pierson’s most recent release, Tomorrow’s Man 3, is no exception. Published under Bywater Bros. Editions, this hybrid book-zine-porno-photo-anthology continues to Let you Know. This edition layers the works of four distinct artists, Pierson, Peter Fend, Richard Tinker and Veralyn Behenna, to create a surprising narrative about the male figure, environmental justice, and the collision of graphic collage with organic form. “Woven into a poetic framework of connections, the resulting narrative takes the Tomorrow’s Man series into new terrain that combines the vernacular of classic photography with the urgent, geo-political narratives of Fend’s texts, and the psychedelic reverberations of Tinkler’s drawings…a sophisticated meditation on culture and nature.

Pierson’s full color photographs are, as always, delicious. Shot in a range of naturally lit (often tropical) environments, he explores the male body with a playful precision that reveals without overwhelming — tastes without gorging. We get to see a range of bodies and bulges, all be them mostly white, that actually feel real.  Fend, Tinker, and Behenna’s artistry energize the photographs with bold text and kaleidoscopic patterns, elevating them beyond their physical subject matter. Imagine: soaring naked into an exploding fractal. And there’s even a female voice in the book, Behenna’s short story slipped neatly into the center of your viewing experience. Intellectual jargon can’t quite sum it all up — the imagery speaks for itself.

Party: HOLY MOUNTAIN – 1 YEAR ANNIVERSARY

I’ve been keeping up with Ladyfag on Instagram and it looks like she had a super busy Summer. She’s been hosting all sorts of cool parties and traveling the world — bitch is busy. However she’s now back in NYC to celebrate the 1 year anniversary of Holy Mountain (aka HoMo). She emailed us to remind us what’s going down this Sunday: “So much magic has been brought to life from the loins of the mountain...so in honour of it’s birthday we are celebrating the BIRTH of all the children of Holy Mountain!” If you haven’t been, or heard of the party, then wake the fuck up! 3 floors, 4 rooms, 8 DJs, special surprise performances and “1 Mountain.” I have been a few times, and I do remember climbing something, but it wasn’t a mountain. Music will be provided by Michael Magnan, Nita Aviance, Ryan Smith, Greg K., Juliana Huxtable, Anthony Dicap, Turtle Bugg, Scooter McCreight from Toronto, and Zutzut from Mexico. Hosted by too many people to list, “the HoMo family” here’s a few of them: Marco Ovando, Ryan Burke, Miss Queen Sateen, Guyton Porter, La’fem Ladosha, Raul Zepole, Jason “The Black Teen Wolf" Rodgers, GITOO, Dese and more. If you show up in “a SERIOUS BIRTH or BIRTHDAY LQQK” it’s only $5! Cute.

$5 b4 11:30. $10 to midnight. $15 after, 10:30PM, Slake, 251 West 30th St. NY, NY.

Event: New York Comic Con

Hey nerds this one’s for you! OK, I’m going to stop right there, because when the only films making any money these days are those featuring comic book characters, being a nerd suddenly seems a lot more mainstream than it once did. I guess you can comfort yourself knowing that being a gay nerd still gives you a little more street cred! This is the 10th annual New York Comic Con at the Javits Center and there’s a new subway station (the 7 train extension at 11th ave) to make your journey there that much easier. Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston is scheduled to show up plus there’s going to be panels and literally hundreds of comic legends autographing their shit. If you’ve never been to a Comic Con you should go for the people watching alone. The costumes people pull out are truly wild — you’d be amazed by the lengths fans will go to with their looks. See above. lol

Check stubHub for tix, 10:00AM, Jacob Javits Center, 655 W. 34th St., NY, NY

Things My Dick Does

A Tumblr Dedicated To Soft Dick Storytelling

In light of Justin Bieber’s vacation nudity, this is a post centered around flaccid dick. I love a soft penis. Some guys are totally insecure about having their flaccid member be seen in the morning after one too many bumps the night before, but some of us (me) like a good lookin’ softy. Not surprisingly, someone has dedicated an entire Tumblr to soft-dick storytelling. This is a whole new kind of graphic narrative. Things My Dick Does is prefaced with, “I’ve always wondered what my dick does in the times he is up before I am. He must get so bored waiting for me to wake up. Happens EVERY day. Poor little guy.” Ok, I knew the Internet was amazing, but not this amazing.

The blog features this guy’s dick in various positions. Baking, reading, hugging a stuffed animal (kudos on the miniature arms), wearing a Batman mask… I mean, the more you scroll down, the more this penis character blows your mind. One of the best staged photos features cum. That’s all I’ll say. The art direction on this blog is bananas and I’m highly interested in a gallery show. The blog features erect penis too, duh.

Please take a look. …

Event: Food Book Fair – GAY FOOD 101: AN ORAL HISTORY

Another food event? Yes! The Fall is here and it’s time to eat. While that might sound crazy to all of you with “Instagram bodies” (you know, those guys that are simply a body and nothing else, they spend most of their time at the gym, they kind of behave like models, but in reality the only agency that represents them is Instagram) but for everyone else this cold weather means it’s time to eat. Just to put it into perspective, two weekends ago Tom and I had brunch twice in one day. We figured that if they didn’t see us at the other restaurant eating no one was the wiser. We were all giggles about it because eating in excess can be hilarious and fun. The Food Book Fair is starting a monthly event called the Food Book Party and this is the first one. Sarah from the awesome zine, Put A Egg On It, who’s one of the moderators, told us more about this event: “We are looking at ways in which gayness/queerness shapes food — from a historical standpoint (James Beard was gay, for example) to how the queerness of chefs and waiters and bartenders shapes the restaurants and bars we love — service as performance in a way.” Also, the queer food magazines Mouthfeel (pictured) and Jarry (recently launched) will be part of this event. Go have some free hot dogs!

$10, 6:30PM-9:00PM, Berg’n, 899 Bergen St. Brooklyn, NY.

Luke Austin’s Beau Book

When I saw the cover of Beau Book, I knew there was something beautiful inside. Its author and Instagram celeb, Luke Austin, set out on a mission to photograph all the men he follows on his account — this collection is the handsome product of that endeavor.

Flipping through its pages, I found the beauty I expected: a stream of images unsurprisingly similar to my soft-core morning Instagram scroll. Swollen bulges and muscled bodies, softly lit, surrounded by fashionable mess or modern minimalism. It’s all beautiful. It’s called Beau Book. Can we say the word again?

But that seems to be as far as it goes: handsome men looking handsome sitting in bedrooms and playing on roofs; chiseled bodies and scruffy jawlines staring off camera. There’s cock and there’s booty and there’s even some gymnastics! My dick is thoroughly tingling, but my eyes are simply scanning. Each image is perfectly contained, their energy confined to the dimensions of their page. Maybe this is his intent — an echo of an artistic Instagram account, but it’s all a bit tidy for me.

I asked Austin a couple of questions to see what he had to say about it:

When did your Instagram career begin? I joined Instagram mid 2011, and by the end of 2012 I had 15k which was kinda crazy back then.
What allowed you to amass such a large social media audience? I think people started following me because of my self portraits. …

Event: Slice Out Hunger’s $1 Slice Night

I’m gonna be honest with you, I hate $1 slices of pizza. I love pizza, it’s just that the $1 version of pizza is always so shitty. Cheap sauces, cheap cheese, you gotta be stupid drunk to enjoy that shit. This Wednesday however I will be chowing down on as many $1 slices as I can fit in my stupid mouth. That’s because it’s for a good cause, and because the pizzerias making these $1 slices are some of the city’s best. Over 50 of them, including Motorino, Nicoletta, Roberta’s and Lombardi’s will be serving $1 slices to benefit the Food Bank for New York City at the St Anthony Of Padua Church. The event was created by pizza lover Scott Wiener of Scott’s Pizza Tours (yes, he actually gives tours of the city’s best pizza restaurants.) Honestly I can’t think of a better way to spend a night than this — there’s going to be over 1000 different pizzas on offer for fucks sake! If you’re really serious about helping you can pre-purchase a ‘VIPizza Passport,’ which costs $100 and gets you 10 slices, but more importantly it puts you at the front of the line so you don’t have to wait with the general public (gross). Nom, nom, nom. Enjoy!

$1, 6:00PM, ST ANTHONY OF PADUA CHURCH, 155 SULLIVAN ST. New York, NY.
