FashionSpeak Fridays: An Evening with Richard Haines

Presented by The National Arts Club Fashion Committee

Fashion: FashionSpeak Fridays with Richard Haines

We have been champions of fashion illustrator Richard Haines for some time. In fact he illustrated our Fashion Week Special Issue (No. 115). Abi and I also both have portraits of ourselves (in various states of undress) drawn by Richard, hanging in our apartments. Our goal is to make him world famous, so those pieces will one day be worth a fortune. Lately he seems to be doing a pretty good job of making that happen himself. Which brings us to Friday’s event at the National Arts Club. It’s a discussion and celebration of his fashion illustration, on display in the Trask Gallery from June 3-7. I’m sure they’ll also cover his blog ‘What I Saw Today’ as well as his work for the Times and his collaborations with Prada. Following the discussion, the Grand Gallery will turn into a sketch lounge hosted by the National Arts Club Sketch Class. They’re asking attendees to “dress to sketch or be sketched!” Wear something nice, or nothing at all. Richard’s good with either.

RSVP: fashion@thenationalartsclub.org - Free, 7pm, The National Arts Club, 15 Gramercy Park South, NY, NY

Fashion: POP SOUK

Nightlife superstar Ladyfag has been doing her massive Pop Souk bazaar for a few years now. It’s been housed at Hiro and Greenhouse, and for the last two years at the Standard Highline. Lady basically asks all her “artist, musician, DJ, designer, fashion junkie” friends to sell the wares from their overflowing closest to all us regular people. Here’s how Lady describes it: “More than just a marketplace, Pop Souk is an event where you’ll find some of the most talented New Yorkers hanging out in their own personal pop-up shops and hocking treasures from their own closets, or selling their original designs and wares.” With a bunch of DJs providing background music (Casey Spooner, Honey Dijon, Joey Trotto Labeija, Telfar and Todd Pendu) it’s like a giant dance party... except you can SHOP, SHOP, SHOP! I’ve found some great finds at previous Pop Souks, including my motel room tag brooch, which garners A LOT of compliments. I know you just got paid, so go spend that money, honey. How will you know you’re alive if you’re not spending money?

FREE, 12pm-6pm, THE STANDARD, HIGH LINE, AT THE BIERGARTEN, LITTLE WEST 12TH ST., NY, NY

A.P.C + Nike Launch new shoe line

I wanted to keep this to myself—since I want a pair, and last year’s versions disappeared faster than a bottle of Pinot Grigio at Nene Leakes house—but I figured I’d be sweet and share the news with all you homos. A.P.C and Nike, for the second year in a row, are collaborating on some pretty looking shoes: “The Air Maxim 1 comes in tonal white and black, properly outfitted with a gum outsole to complete each shoe. The Dunk High’s come in tonal black and beige with combinations of suede and leather.” All shoes will compliment your looks this summer…if you can get your hands on a pair. —TOM

The A.P.C.+Nike collection is available at A.P.C. stores and online, tomorrow May 15th

THE NIGHT PUNK DIED.

The Met Gala 2013 drawn to life.

We asked our illustrator Devin Wallace to draw a few of the looks from the Met Gala on Sunday night. The theme for the evening was “punk,” which from what we saw meant almost nothing to those in attendance.  The fact that Vivienne Westwood, the mother of punk, was cut off while talking about the unfairly imprisoned Bradley Manning, on the red carpet, says all you need to know about how little respect Vogue (or maybe just Anna Wintour) has for the movement.

Grace Coddington, who’s the only good thing about that magazine, said it best on the night: “Well I’d like to see some real punks in here, some real street punks. But I doubt they were invited.”

_______________

First off, let’s just say we loved Miley’s Marc Jacob‘s look, it’s youthful, fun, unfussy; everything that American Vogue isn’t. Love the mesh, love the spiky hair. The Huffington Post headlined a photo of her with “What’s Up With The Hair?” What a fucking stupid question. The theme was punk, and Miley clearly took the directive seriously; we think it’s cunt!

Like Beyonce, and many others, Madonna wore Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci. I have no complaints with this look; it’s bold, her veiny, sinewy arms, legs, neck (let’s just go with whole body) is well covered, and the bob cut is like a cooler version of Anna’s hair.

Was Anna Wintour’s  theme of “punk” for the gala actually an elaborate “punk” to embarrass celebrities? …

Event: WEARABLE ART FROM WARHOL TO WESTWOOD

We admire people that make an effort to leave their house each day wearing something interesting. I mean why buy art when you can be walking around wearing it? The organizer Victor P. Corona tells us that this event is inspired by the Metropolitan Museum’s upcoming Punk: Chaos to Couture exhibition. The ‘Wearable Art from Warhol to Westwood’ discussion “will engage the question—if and how fashion can be considered wearable art...The panel will bring together a sociologist studying style with Michael Alig... a designer who makes dresses out of laminated images, a leading street style photographer, and the author of Andy Warhol’s New York City.” It makes complete sense that bitches that wear art everyday, the mother of trouble Gerry Visco (I mean the woman wears every possible color in the spectrum all at once) and the always cunty Leo Gugu (pictured) will be there. As far as I am concern their looks are both art and fashion. After the event head to the after party at Catwalk, hosted by “nightlife and style icon” Susanne Bartsch, bitch is still alive for the sake of fashion.

$10, 8PM, The Gershwin Hotel, 7 East 27th St. NY, NY.

Mode in France

William Klein is a brilliant fashion photographer, but who knew he also made movies? French television commissioned him to direct this sexy film about “the new creators of couture.” ‘Mode in France,’ is a gleefully irreverent survey of high fashion in the 80’s. The flic includes works by Gaultier, Montana (oh that queen), Kenzo, Alaïa and the like. Do a bump or 2 and go check it out. —MOSSY

This film is playing tonight at the Museum of Art and Design at 7PM, Get tickets.

Weirdest oscars ever

A GAYLETTER look at the 2013 Academy Awards

Where to start? Firstly, last night’s Oscars was one of the weirdest we’ve ever seen. It was like the bizarro Oscars. And it officially sealed the deal on our dislike of Seth Macfarlane. His jokes were lame, misogynistic and not very clever. The whole thing felt very surreal, almost cynical. But we’re not here to talk about the show, let’s get straight to the looks.

We asked illustrator Devin Wallace to draw some of the most memorable moments of the night. He didn’t illustrate any of the men because most of them looked the same — white men wearing the usual Oscar uniform of a black tuxedo, nothing new, some fit, some didn’t, blah, blah blah.

At least Tarantino was wearing a leather tie, but that’s still not interesting enough for us to show. So on to the ladies!

First off — K-Stewart? Apparently she cut her foot on some glass earlier that day (sounds shady) which is why she needed the crutches. When she walked out on stage with Harry Potter, limping with messy hair, our first thought was that her and Potter had clearly just had some rough sex on top of a sound board backstage. Girl even had a bruise on one arm. The Reem Acra gown is pretty though. Very expected,  but on trend for the night — being strapless and all.

Then there was Anne Hathaway. Apparently her pale pink PRADA gown was not her first choice. …
