Film: CALL ME KUCHU

No, Kuchu is not a sweet term of endearment one calls their lover or dear friend but the name of a homosexual, lesbian, bi or trans person in Uganda. And ‘Call Me Kuchu’ is a riveting documentary that tells the story of Uganda’s first openly gay man and activist David Kato’s quest to repeal his countries homophobic laws and fight an “Anti-Homosexuality Bill” that proposes the death penalty for HIV+ gay men and prison for anyone who fails to “turn in” a known homosexual. Sounds insane right! Filmmakers Mailina Zouhali-Worrali and Katherine Fairfax Wright had unprecedented access to David and a fiery group of activists as they mounted their public protest on TV, in the courts and at the UN. David insisted, “If we keep on hiding, they will say we are not here.” Tragically, just 1 year into filming, David was brutally murdered at home. News of his death sent a shockwave of sorrow and heightened awareness of the kuchus plight around the world. David was one kuchu to be reckoned with. Watch the film and get inspired by his dogged determination and beautiful spirit, although his end was tragic the film is nothing short of inspiring.

OPENS AT THE QUAD CINEMA THIS FRIDAY, 34 W 13th St. NY, NY.

Film: LIKE IT IS

Everyone likes a bit of rough trade every now and then. British indie film, ‘Like It Is’ serves up a plate full when Craig, a hot ripped bare knuckles club fighter from Blackpool, falls for Matt, a hip blond music producer from London. The two boys meet outside a gay club (Craig doesn’t have the mojo to go in) and go back to Matt’s flat for an attempt at a shag that ultimately ignites a relationship. Craig leaves behind his closeted life in Blackpool and moves in with Matt. Roger Daltrey from The Who turns in a brilliant performance as Matt’s smarmy gay boss spicing up the plot quite a bit. There is a Rocky-esque ending, training footage et al, with love ultimately prevailing. It’s definitely a feel good film, albeit a slightly battered one. If you wanna see a hot boy take a punch or two to the body (as well as a few up the bum) this film’s for you!

Fourplay

One of the kinkiest films I’ve seen in a long while is playing at the LGBT Center tonight at 7:30PM. It’s called Fourplay and features “Four intimate tales of sexual triumph and travail.”  The film manages to endlessly titillate with with sexy lesbian dream sequences, gay bathroom sex orgies, a cross dressing sex worker and his quadriplegic client and a whole lot more. Executive produced by Michael Stipe and Jim McKay, Fourplay delivers a unique look at today’s multifaceted world of sexuality. The director Kyle Henry, writer Jessica Hendrick and the actor who plays the cross dressing sex worker Paul Soileau (Christeene) will be on hand for a Q&A. —MOSSY

Tickets: $5, LGBT Community Center, 208 W. 13th St. NY, NY.

CRUISING

It’s 1980, there’s a serial killer loose in the the gay S&M scene in the West Village and body parts are being found floating in the Hudson river. A young, and hung, Al Pacino goes undercover as a sexy cop in a leather cap, jacket and tight jeans to catch the murderer. The movie’s called Cruising and it’s a bit heavy, but a gay classic none-the-less, plus Pacino is totally convincing as a leather top! During filming, the movie was protested by gay activists who thought it had a homophobic political message. There were marches—some gays even resorted to “pointing mirrors from rooftops to ruin lighting for scenes, blasting whistles and air horns near locations, and playing loud music.” Over time criticism of the film has softened. I look at it as a great opportunity to see the early 80’s gay scene—at the height of it’s madness—before the onset of AIDS.

Down a couple beers, grab your poppers and head out to BAM for what will be a truly memorable movie experience. Click here for tickets. —MOSSY

Film: Sebastiane

So, ever since I watched Derek Jarman’s Caravaggio I have been obsessed with the filmmaker’s work. When I came upon his 1976 film Sebastiane, a collaboration with Paul Humfress I had to watch. OMG — the film portrays the events of the life of Saint Sebastiane and is filmed in Latin, no wonder I didn’t understand one fucking word of it, but who cares, it was so fucking hot it didn’t matter. A bunch of tanned semi-naked and naked studs running around an arid Greek isle fighting, fucking, dancing, playing, and torturing poor Sebastiane until he meets his untimely death by the myriad of arrows as he helplessly stands strapped to a pole in the blistering sun. Margaret Walters, the author of The Nude Male, had this to say about Sebastiane: “male nudes in various stages of ecstasy positively littered the screen.” She suggested this film was “successfully aimed at a very specialized homosexual audience.” No shit Margaret! This film is the bomb! Hats off to Jarman who made a film so erotically charged it still sizzles on the screen, even today. Check it out, it will NOT disappoint.

Available on Netflix.

Tomasz Wasilewski’s film is good for Poland

We chatted with the director of ‘Floating Skyscrapers, a new film that premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. The polish director breaks down the film, talks about his fear of being alone and his future plans.

Do you live in Poland? Where did you grow up? I live in Warsaw. I have been living in Poland all my life, but I grew up in a smaller city in the center of Poland, for 17 years. My family moved to Warsaw when I was in high school, and I’ve been living there since.

What was your inspiration to create this film, Floating Skyscrapers? Well actually I had two stories, and at the beginning I thought that the movie was going to be about a mother and a daughter. Then, when I was developing the story I decided that I wanted to make a movie about two guys, because it’s a subject that is not very common in Polish cinema. I wanted to make something new for Polish viewers.

Why was it important to create a film like this in Poland? As a filmmaker I try to look for a subject that’s interesting for me. You saw my movie right? It focuses on human character, the person is the most important, which is the same as my first movie.

Do you have a close connection to the characters? How did you decide on the storyline? Everything is made up, I write a lot, I am a screenwriter and I write everyday. …

Polish Film Star Makes a Splash

Polish actor Mateusz Banasiuk is staring in Floating Skyscrapers, the second film by ‘In The Bedroom’ director, Tomasz Wasilewski. It’s a hot and steamy, but also searingly deep, story of a professional swimmer, Kuba, who’s life changes after meeting the very handsome Mikal. Only problem is Kuba has a long-term girlfriend who he’s comfortably hetero-co-habitating with. Mateusz, who is straight, played the role of a confused gay man, very convincingly. He was also a pleasure to chat with and had no problem taking his shirt off for some pics, which we appreciated. Floating Skyscrapers had its world premier at the TriBeCa Film Festival and is now playing.

How old are you Mateusz? I’m 27 years old, but as you saw I look really young, when I was flying to New York I asked the flight attendant to give me a beer and she asked me: “How old are you?” She thought maybe I was under 21…

Yeah, I can see that, you have young skin. Yeah and I feel young inside, and I usually play young guys, I’m trying out a mustache as you can see, but it doesn’t help…

You played a swimmer in the movie, are you a swimmer in real life? I like swimming very much, it’s like a meditation for me, I feel good in my body when I train, and sometimes when I go to the pool a lot I feel addicted to it. But just before the movie, Tomasz (the director), asked me if I can swim and if I thought it was possible for me to do all the scenes alone? …

Film: FLOATING SKYSCRAPERS

I’m so thrilled we got this email last week from the Tribeca Film Festival asking us to support their LGBT film entry from Poland, Floating Skyscrapers. It is an impeccably shot and beautifully told love story about a brooding champion swimmer, Kuba (Mateusz Banasiuk), who while dating a girl named Sylwia (Marta Nieradkiewicz) falls for a dark stud, Michal (Bartosz Gelner), at an art opening. Simple premise, yes I know, but in the hands of director Tomasz Wasilewski it becomes a multifaceted gem. “An intimate and bold feature that captures the myriad consequences of finding love in forbidden places.” It takes awhile for the boys to “get busy” but once they do it, gets real hot. Surprisingly, for me at least, what’s even hotter is the scene in which Kuba goes down on Sylwia—made me wanna eat some pussy! The three lives get quite intertwined, plus there’s also Kuba’s mother, thrown in as a second roomate, who’s love for Kuba complicates matters further. Watch out for the heart wrenching plot twist at the end. Oh, and keep an eye out for Kuba’s gorgeous uncut cock. Who knew Polish cinema could be so fierce...or their boys could be so fine? Sneak a beer and a kielbasa into the theatre and have a party...
