The Center Presents ‘The Eighties’

An advanced screening and panel with Don Lemon in NYC

A few weeks ago I saw a commercial for CNN’s upcoming seven-episode original series ‘The Eighties and immediately thought to tell my mom. My parents were married in ’84 — when it was appropriate for my mother to serve Bon Jovi hair and my father could wear shorts way above his knees (now you know where I get my style cues). And then more recently, I was reading something in Out, where a man described another man as “so pre-AIDS,” and thought: Wow! What a largely insensitive (though more or less accurate…) way to describe someone! What I’m getting at is that the eighties were a decade that defined so many of today’s references, and while all of it’s glam rock and politics still carry heavy agency today, most of it has become romanticized for the worse. However! This is CNN we’re talking about! So it will be not done for the worse! (I assume).

Because such a large part of the ’80s was defined by the AIDS crisis, ‘The Eighties’ features an episode “that examines the HIV/AIDS crisis in the 1980s, which developed into a pandemic with enormous political and cultural consequences. It’s a story of ignorance and heartbreak, but also one of compassion, courage and dedication.”

On April 5th, at 6:30PM, The Center will be showing an advanced screening of this episode followed by a panel discussion and Q&A moderated by Don Lemon, anchor of “CNN Tonight with Don Lemon.” It’s the perfect thing to do this Tuesday even if the weather blows, but this should be a really chill time, and educational to boot. …

Party: BATTLE HYMM

Here’s a brand new party by Ladyfag! Battle Hymm begins this Sunday, April 3rd and continues “the long tradition in gay culture of going to “church,”” she’s calling it a “post-T” party since it starts early (at 9:00PM). Knowing some of you, you will likely just be finishing with brunch by then. “We’re playing disco & classic house, then we’ve got house & tech house to make you dance till dawn…” The music will be provided by resident DJs The Carry Nation and Honey Dijon. This week the DJ Todd Terry will join the opening party. It seems that Ladyfag will have surprises each week: who else is coming for the opening week? We’ll just have to wait and see. It’s Spring and the flowers are coming out, the cum trees are almost blooming, this is all very exciting. We have been waiting for a great Sunday party, this one seems very promising. Ladyfag is describing it as “The gospel according to the dancefloor…” Cute.

free before 10:00pm, $10-15 after, 9:00PM-3:00AM, Flash Factory, 229 W 28th St. NY, NY.

One Night Only: Drag Parody of The Witches of Eastwick

The New York premiere of The Witches of Eastwick comes to The Gramercy Theater on April 2nd. It’s a parody “loosely” based on the classic film The Witches of Eastwick, which we don’t really remember it’s plot points of, but it made us feel amazing! I mean Cher, Susan Sarandon and Michelle Pfeiffer, hello!

This show, staring drag queens Chad Michaels, Coco Peru and Peaches Christ. It was written and directed by Joshua Grannell. Here’s the plot points: “three seasoned drag queens —  a Cher impersonator, an acclaimed monologuist, and a cinephile — are invited to perform in the picturesque East Village of New York. The trio of sassy singles are feeling lonely until a mysterious and flamboyant drag fan arrives in their lives. But what are his ultimate intentions? What follows is devilishly fun — you’ll laugh till you toss your cherries!”

Love it!

$30-$75, 7:00PM & 10:00PM, The Gramercy Theater, 127 East 23rd St. NY, NY. …

Party: RAZOR 5000

This party is produced by the Brooklyn based drag queen Horrorchata, it’s an “LGBTQ event done in a diverse, safe and sickening way.” Razor was a slang word in the 90s and 5000 “is the level of turn up” Horrorchata told me over Facebook chat. Yeah we are modern. “Razor happens every full moon — but more like once a year lol.” There’s going to be a special performance by the amazing Merrie Cherry and a “latina take over” which sounds great, anything to make Trump mad. Yasss Latina power. Basically lots of the people involved are Latinas including Zemmoa (she is Mexico city’s new it girl according to Paper Magazine), Amor Prohibido (Selena Cover Band), Will Zanni. DJs BeBe (Tortura), Honey Daniels and Horrorchata. Also involved, are some “dragz” including Untitled Queen, Lady Quesdilla and Raul de Nieves. Trust me they are not the only ones in drag. Other hosts include: JamesMichael (Huffington Post), Avory QuincyAgony (Hey Queen), Alan Salcedo Alrahi III (Social Ducky) and Tyler Ashley (Dalphine of Bushwick). These people love a title. Food is by Empanada Lady NYC. That’s it.

$10, 10:00PM, SECRET PROJECT ROBOT, 389 MELROSE St. BROOKYN, NY.

Art: Affordable Art Fair in NYC

Let me be honest up front, there’s plenty of shitty art at the New York Affordable Art Fair, like a lot. BUT. If you search hard enough you can find yourself a gem or two. The fair features 70 local, national, and international galleries with works of art (I use that term loosely, kidding) from over 500 artists. There’s bound to be something you can find in a collection that size. Prices at the fair range from $100 to $10,000. The art fair was started in 1999 and today it takes place in cities including Amsterdam, Bristol, Brussels, New York, Milan, London, Singapore, Hamburg, Seoul, Stockholm and Hong Kong. The art fair is open in Nw York City until April 3, 2016. It’s a cute idea. And just think, all the best artists today sold affordable art at one time.

$18, 11:00AM-6:00PM, Metropolitan Pavilion, 125 W 18TH ST. NY, NY.

OPENING RECEPTION FOR GIO BLACK PETER’S ‘IF WE DO NOT DESTROY OURSELVES’

The exhibition is up until May 26th at Casa de Costa

Fashion: ELKEL Presents Julian Zigerli “White Rabbit”

We are very excited to be able to tell you all about this party for Swiss fashion designer Julian Zigerli’s SS16 Collection, which he’s titled “White Rabbit.” The collection “takes inspiration from the duality of Japanese culture, combining light and dark, cute and twisted. The prints featured in “White Rabbit” resulted from an encounter between Zigerli and Japanese illustrator Seitaro Ito, the visionary behind foxy illustrations.” Julian’s clothes are always very playful, bright and fun to wear. If you’re not afraid of a bold print he’s your man. The launch party is RSVP only, so do that before it fills up. The party will feature a DJ set by Casey Spooner and “dancers wearing the sexiest/cutest swim briefs you’ve ever seen!” It’s hosted by another GAYLETTER favorite, the shop Elkel at Public Factory. Long live fayshun!

Free, (RSVP: hello@elkel.nyc), 7:00PM, Elkel at Public Factory, 310 W Broadway NY, NY.

GIO BLACK PETER: IF WE DO NOT DESTROY OURSELVES

We are super excited about the opening of Gio Black Peter’s latest exhibition of paintings and drawings titled ‘If We Do Not Destroy Ourselves.’ It has been a while since we’ve had a kiki with Gio, he has obviously been very busy creating new work. I chatted with Gio briefly and he told me that the show is about “finding the beauty in destruction without destroying yourself. It’s a view into my head, my feelings of the world inside and my views of the world around me. For example “The Velvet Ribbon” (the painting used on the invite) is about the end of the idea of “White America.” “Bad Cops Make Good Snacks” is my Adam & Eve painting, Adam is black and Eve is transgendered-corruption is depicted by a cops hand sticking out of a snakes mouth. Every image tells a story, I leave it to the viewer to figure it out.”

I peeked at some of the work and they look great, they are as colorful as his previous work, but there is a lot more to take in, as he described before there’s obviously lots to figure out from each piece. From what I’ve seen this is his most ambitious work, in terms of scale; he has some murals, he told me that they are the largest paintings he’s shown in the U.S. Come to the opening reception and support Gio, he told me that he would not be showing his peen at this event, like he usually does, “It’s all about the art.” …

Daybreaker presents DUSK #2 Inside Willy Wonka’s Head

A positive love/dance-fest that is booze free

Our friend Beatrice has been going to this Daybreaker party for some time now. She’s asked me to come a couple of times, the only problem is they start at 6:00AM, which is not an hour I will ever get up at unless I’m going to the airport or running from a burning building. This week, on March 29th, the party is switching shit up and taking place in the early evening. If you’re unfamiliar with the Daybreaker concept, it’s basically a positive love/dance-fest that is booze free — it’s a dance party for people who care more about dancing than partying. Which means you probably get a lot of self-righteous health nuts, but hey, people who don’t drink (for whatever reason) should still have a place they can comfortably go to to let their hair down. This city is tailor-made for lushes (which is why we love it so much) but that doesn’t mean everyone else should have to suffer. Put on your dancing shoes, grab a green juice and get lit, naturally.

$35-$45, 6:30pm, The Gilded Lily, 408 W 15th St. New York, NY. …

Do: Spring Cleaning

Spring is coming, I don’t care if it’s cold at the moment, or what the weather app on my iPhone says, I can feel it in me bones — the seasons are changing GOD DAMMIT! And with the change of seasons comes a chance to change something else in your life. We don’t care what you do, but you owe it to your pagan ancestors to shake some shit up, so why not start with your apartment, or your room? Spring is the season of renew. So re-paint your bedroom, replace a piece of furniture that’s getting old, replant something, rearrange your place, remove something you no longer use (ie. give away some old clothes, then use the receipt as a deduction on your taxes). Change something, anything. It may be scary at first, but it’s the best thing you could do for yourself, just ask a neuroscientist. Apparently every time you change your surroundings, you create new neural connections — you literally expand your mind. So what are you waiting for? Spring to it!

FREE, RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW.

Party: WRECKED – 5 YEARS ANNIVERSARY

Wrecked parties are always a lot of fun — the DJs really turn it out, you always know what you’re going to get. This weekend they are celebrating their 5 year anniversary at Analog in South Brooklyn plus it’s the birthday of one of their resident DJs Ryan Smith (pictured), who’s DJing along with Ron Like Hell and Tad Haes (Occupy The Disco, NYC). Expect a lot of dancing, "serious sound," lots of boys, sweat (they are even encouraging you to “dress to sweat”), naked bodies, booze, wigs, glitter, some pussy, dicks, poppers…you know the usual suspects. Writing about parties is so silly, I mean it’s just a party, right? But, then again, we have lots of out of town readers so this might be helpful. Just go and get Wrecked! Happy Anniversary and thanks for providing us with an awesome party. Cheers!

$10-$20, 12:00PM, Analog, 177 2nd Avenue Brooklyn, NY.
