Tom of Finland: Pleasure of Play

When I saw my first Tom of Finland image as a small, curious, yet closeted gay teen I was utterly flabbergasted. Never before had I seen such a bold and titillating expression of male sexuality that I think subconsciously influenced my taste in men. Born Touko Laaksonen in Finland in 1920 Tom of Finland I am told is considered to be the most iconic gay artist of the 20th century. Artists Space is having an opening for their new exhibition of Tom’s work with more than 180 drawings from the 1940’s and over 300 pages of collages and early childhood works. By now I’m sure you’ve seen one or two of his masterfully executed drawings with the focus on cock, cock, and more cock. “His emblematic larger-than-life drawn phalluses not only threaten the existing symbolic order of heterosexuality, but also reorganize the principles by which (homo-) sexual desires are structured.” Oh, ok, I just thought they made gay men hot. Of interesting note, Tom had his first gallery exhibition in New York, facilitated by the help of his friend Mr. Robert Mapplethorpe who he met in 1978 in San Francisco (that must have been an interesting evening). Please tell me you’re in town this weekend and your half share on Fire Island hasn’t started yet. I would love to see you at the opening to have a few beers and possibly sleep together. Mossy’s back!

Event: OITNB Season 3 Lezathon

We are usually pretty light on coverage of lesbian events, it’s not because we don’t like lesbians, it’s simply because we are not lesbians and we don’t get sent enough lesbian events. The fact is “pussy” is one of our favorite words — It’s kind of sad we don’t have any lesbian friends, but we’re happy one finally reached out to us about this event. “How about an event for the ladies?” is what the message read. The “one and only lesbian dating app,” HER is hosting a “major” party this Friday, June 12 at The Royal for the Season 3 premiere of Orange is the New Black!!! I am so fucking excited about this, I am just gonna jump and scream for a minute. Yassssss! They told us that they are bringing “girls on girls on girls, prison hooch, and an intimate photo booth” to the party. I have no words to describe how cool that all sounds, I just want to finish writing this post so my hands are free. Even better all our readers go for FREE using the code: friends. We will post the link on our Facebook page shortly for you to reserve your ticket. Power to the pussy!

$0-$15, 7:00PM, The Royal NYC, 127 4th Ave. New York, NY.

Alvin Ailey at Lincoln Center

There are a thousand and one reasons to go see the legendary dance company Alvin Ailey perform during their two week engagement at Lincoln Center that kicked off with the Ailey Spirit Gala earlier this week but I’ll just share a few here.

On June 11, at 6:30pm the Ailey Extension instructor Eddie Stockton and DJ C_Boogie are throwing down a free house dance class outside on the Josie Robertson Plaza at Lincoln Center. They say all ages are welcome and no experience is necessary. Then later on in the evening the company is performing the world premiere of hip-hop choreographer Rennie HarrisExodus,“a poignant and powerful depiction of the transition from our physical world to the spiritual afterlife.” Not to worry if you can’t be spontaneous and go tonight, you have other opportunities to see it.

There are so many other treats in their program including Ronald K Brown’s Grace, Hofesh Schechter’s Uprising and Christopher Wheeldon’s After The Rain Pas de Deux. Of sad note, the company will be performing one of my new absolute favorite pieces called Chroma on June 18th for the last time….ever! I went on and on about it here when I saw it at the Joyce, it is flawless. So go get your dance on, tickets start at $25 and it’s Ailey at Lincoln Center honies!

Ticket prices and performance times vary. David H. Koch Theatre, 20 Lincoln Center Plaza, NY, NY. …

Fashion: ELKEL POP UP SHOP

Elkel is opening another pop-up shop (June 11-21) on Orchard St. in New York City that you should all go check out. It’s the only store in the US that stocks one of GAYLETTER’s favorite brands, Julian Zigerli, plus they’re selling our magazine, so like, hashtag obsessed. Some of the other brands they carry include Dusty, Bleach Project, Ytinifninfinity, IndyAnna, TILLYandWILLIAM and many more. Here’s more info about the shop: “Tightly curated by founder Kelvin Goncalves, the selection is a sought after mix of local independent makers from all across the globe; Sweden, Indonesia, Germany, Brazil, Switzerland, Mexico, England and the U.S. From styles such as structured, cut-out, digitally printed tailored shirts, to surreal internet glitch tees, to angular mesh tanks, to tops that turn into chaps, the prices hit a diverse spectrum, much like the shoppers themselves.” Weird, hard-to-find, slutty fashion that anyone can afford is what I got from that quote. Basically my dream shop. Melt that bowl in your freezer holding your Discover card and buy some shit!

JUNE 11-21, Elkel, 160 Orchard St. NEW YORK, NY.

Pumps and a Bump

A new monthly event at The Cock

When I first saw the name Pumps &/A Bump, I imagined myself railing coke off a Louboutin. Nothing I have read or heard about this party since has made that image any less likely. Hosted by Richard Kennedy, this new monthly starts tonight, June 10, at The Cock and is guaranteed to get “REAL good and REAL nasty.” The poster for the event is straight-up confusing, which I think is a good sign.

The Cock remains one of the last “anything goes” gay bars in the city, so get ready to get seedy and sweaty and just about anything you want. DJs Calore and BUDDAH FUNKENSTEIN’s Soundclouds are promising, with genre hashtags ranging from ‘Funk’ to ‘House’ to ‘Squirting.’ I’m literally bouncing to Funkenstein as I write this and I’m definitely not mad about it. But here’s the thing, as I said the party is tonight (Wednesday) so read quick, locate your best tearoom attire ASAP, and prepare to get a little sticky — it’s humid out there boys.

$5, 11:00PM, The Cock, 29 Second Ave. New York, NY. …

Event: Put A Egg On It No.10 Release Party

The awesome indie food magazine Put A Egg on It just released their 10th issue and they are going to be having a “tasty release party” at Von. Hosted by the legendary Linda Simpson with music by the amazing JD Samson, plus, fried eggs by Jenn De La Vega. I have never had fried eggs at a party. Here’s what you should expect from issue 10: “we’re finally putting a egg on it! Put A Egg On It #10 is a feast of dishes such as Andy Warhol’s kitchen portraits of fabulous friends, Lars K. Huse’s charming illustrated guide to goat cheese on the Norwegian island of Håøya and Dustin Wayne Harris’s photos of First Date Cakes. Sarah Keough joins our New Orleans family for a festive pork stew dinner. Kati Krause and Mike Albo explore the connection between love, longing, obsession and food, Charles Graeber reminisces about cooking at a fading hotel on a Maine island while Danyel Smith tries to change her habitual cocktail.” Limited open bar of Negronis (OMG my fave!) followed by a drink special after. Let’s go and support this awesome indie publication! Everything’s better with an egg on top.

FREE, 7:00PM-10:00PM, VON, 3 Bleecker St. NY, NY.

Alan Cumming Sings Sappy Songs

Raise a martini, grab your kerchief, and search for a sugar daddy, Alan Cumming Sings Sappy Songs, calls for all three. Debuting at Café Carlyle from June 2nd until June 13th for $100 a pop, Alan Cumming’s performance covers a slew of songs and personal stories from Billy Joel and Miley Cyrus to family trauma and emotional strife. Despite the seriousness intermingled with his theatrics, Cumming remains the provocative, occasionally insane pansexual you know and love.

Co-host of the latest Tony’s, Cumming is now joined on stage by a pianist, cellist, and drummer to entertain his increasingly intimate crowd. Covering Broadway and contemporary Pop alike, he runs the full, flaming gambit in his Cumming cabaret fashion. But if you haven’t yet picked up on the purpose of this post or the puns there in, let me lay it out flat: Cum, come, come to Alan Cumming Sings Sappy Songs before it’s too late.

$100-120, 8:45PM & 10:45PM, Café Carlyle, 35 East 76th Street at Madison Ave. New York, NY.  …

Event: Roberta’s Art Party

This is probably the most Brooklyn thing you’ll do all year, yes even more Brooklyn than the “Celebrate Brooklyn” event we wrote up for Wednesday. It’s an art party in a parking lot in Bushwick with pizza and beer, and it’s sponsored by Vice and Vans. It could be a disaster, but even if it is you’ll have delicious slices of Roberta’s pizza to distract you. The pizza/art party is happening both days this weekend (June 6 and 7). “DJs Spliffington and Trice Cat will provide the beats, along with a guest set by Hot Girls Eating Pizza (naturally).” Parking lot parties remind me of Melbourne (where I grew up) I guess there’s plenty of empty ones in that city so they were popular for music festivals and dance parties. If I could give you a tip for attending an event like this it would be to wear a hat and use sunscreen. Parking lots aren’t known for their shade, so you’ll likely heat up pretty quickly. Drink lots of water, and beer and water and then more beer, and don’t forget the pizza, and the art... oh hell, have I sold you on this thing yet!?

11:00AM-6:00PM, Wonton Foods parking lot, 220-222 Moore St. Brooklyn, NY.

Art: Malcolm Morley

I HAD to tell you about this show before it comes down this Saturday. There are very few living legends left in the art world, therefore when one performs, exhibits or makes a public appearance it is imperative that you attend, especially if you live in the city where it’s going down. Painter Malcolm Morley is one such legend and his current exhibition of new works at Sperone Westwater is nothing short of spectacular. Yes, 84 this June 7th, Morley has been turning the art world on it’s head for over five decades, securing his place in art history early on in his career with the “highly colored Superrealist paintings of ocean liners and the luxurious but vacuous life of their passengers.” Actually one such canvas’ “On Deck,” painted in 1966, hangs in the permanent collection of modern works at The Metropolitan Museum. Returning to visual themes that have been pervasive in his works from the onset, the new exhibition is more vibrant and colorful than ever, and includes imagery of ships, airplanes, trains, lighthouses and impeccably crafted models attached to the canvas, or free standing, made entirely out of watercolor paper. Housed in an extraordinary Norman Foster designed building on the Bowery, Morley’s paintings may just prove to be the perfect antidote to this unusually grey and chilly weather we are having.

FREE, 10:00AM-6:00PM, Sperone Westwater, 257 Bowery NY, NY.

Party: CRUISE

A brand new party called Cruise is coming to Brooklyn which is cute because we like new things! Our friend Tanner Cohen is hosting it with his friend Ivan Dutton. Tanner told me it has “a gay Summer theme that fits perfectly with the venue cause its soooo cute and ratchet and there’s a huge ugly/hot pirate statue outside welcoming in the thot parade…” Oh, OK, Tanner. “We invite you to let your beach hair down, pour up some Alizé, and bask in the tropical, sexy, and ratchet flavors of the majestic Call Box Lounge for this epic and salty night.” I love that ratchet is coming back! Also, we are trying to bring Fierce back. It might have to wait since we’ve decided that the thing to say now is “She done already done had herses.” Music for the night is by DJs Chapman, Ivenchy +Tarzan. You must come in some sort of nautical look “or die,” but if you hate nautical show up in an anti-white people outfit, that always works! “#wenchbettahavemybooty #porthole #allhandsondick #mate4mate #rumsnatch #suricruise #penelopecruz #fleekweek #poopdeck #seaworld #comethrough” Check out this video!

Violet Chachki’s “Bettie” Needs a Spank

Drag Race winner releases debut music video

Now that this season of RuPaul’s Drag Race is over, I have a confession to make: I had a hard time coming around to Violet Chachki. She turned out pitch-perfect looks all season, fully owned her self-confident bitch persona, and still, something didn’t click for me. She wasn’t as covertly nasty as the older queens, nor as anonymous and overeager as some of the younger ones, but there was just something missing to me that made winners of the past stand out. That was, of course, until that excellent leather and lace challenge, which seemed custom-made for Violet — the corset was cinched, the thong was on, the gag was in, and bitch was living. It was a turning point, and made me fall head over heels for her.

So to see that Miss Chachki has released a leather-themed music video for her debut single “Bettie” in the wake of her coronation is something of a cherry on top of a weird but ultimately satisfying season of Drag Race. “Bettie” is your typical electronic fare, with Violet intoning sultrily over a pounding, snappy beat. “Daddy needs a walk, Bettie needs a spank,” she cries, a fleet of cute men and boys coming through Violet’s house (and walking right past her “husband”) to take part in a fun bit of dungeon-y S&M. It’s certainly the best of the songs this season’s Drag Race queens have been putting out en masse, and the video comes with a healthy supply of jockstraps, leather, and bulges, of course. …

Event: NAKED COUTURE

I recently watched a commercial for this reality TV show called Skin Wars with RuPaul (he’s one of the judges). My first impression was What the fuck? A competition about body painters? I mean whatever, right? Anything can be a reality show these days. So, here’s the deal, Gawker and Skin Wars are hosting a party together at Kinfolk 94. Our friend Victor Jeffreys II, who’s helping promote the party, told me that Gage of the Boone (from The Spectrum) and Diego Montoya (from MIX film festival) are working with the winner of the first season of the show, Natalie Fletcher, “to bring the kids 8 painted looks inspired by the future.” This is the sort of event you just have to experience — it could be amazing or a shit show, or a combination of both. Music is by Danny Taylor. Victor arranged something special for our readers: “The first 25 people to RSVP using GAYLETTER in the ‘invited by’ block will have access to the open bar...Anyone after will have to pay for their own drinks (which are still cheap).” Cool?

FREE WITH RSVP, 8:00PM, KINFOLK 94, WYTHE AVE BK, NY.
