Tom of Finland: Pleasure of Play

When I saw my first Tom of Finland image as a small, curious, yet closeted gay teen I was utterly flabbergasted. Never before had I seen such a bold and titillating expression of male sexuality that I think subconsciously influenced my taste in men. Born Touko Laaksonen in Finland in 1920 Tom of Finland I am told is considered to be the most iconic gay artist of the 20th century. Artists Space is having an opening for their new exhibition of Tom’s work with more than 180 drawings from the 1940’s and over 300 pages of collages and early childhood works. By now I’m sure you’ve seen one or two of his masterfully executed drawings with the focus on cock, cock, and more cock. “His emblematic larger-than-life drawn phalluses not only threaten the existing symbolic order of heterosexuality, but also reorganize the principles by which (homo-) sexual desires are structured.” Oh, ok, I just thought they made gay men hot. Of interesting note, Tom had his first gallery exhibition in New York, facilitated by the help of his friend Mr. Robert Mapplethorpe who he met in 1978 in San Francisco (that must have been an interesting evening). Please tell me you’re in town this weekend and your half share on Fire Island hasn’t started yet. I would love to see you at the opening to have a few beers and possibly sleep together. Mossy’s back!

Alvin Ailey at Lincoln Center

There are a thousand and one reasons to go see the legendary dance company Alvin Ailey perform during their two week engagement at Lincoln Center that kicked off with the Ailey Spirit Gala earlier this week but I’ll just share a few here.
On June 11, at 6:30pm the Ailey Extension instructor Eddie Stockton and DJ C_Boogie are throwing down a free house dance class outside on the Josie Robertson Plaza at Lincoln Center. They say all ages are welcome and no experience is necessary. Then later on in the evening the company is performing the world premiere of hip-hop choreographer Rennie Harris’ Exodus,“a poignant and powerful depiction of the transition from our physical world to the spiritual afterlife.” Not to worry if you can’t be spontaneous and go tonight, you have other opportunities to see it.
There are so many other treats in their program including Ronald K Brown’s Grace, Hofesh Schechter’s Uprising and Christopher Wheeldon’s After The Rain Pas de Deux. Of sad note, the company will be performing one of my new absolute favorite pieces called Chroma on June 18th for the last time….ever! I went on and on about it here when I saw it at the Joyce, it is flawless. So go get your dance on, tickets start at $25 and it’s Ailey at Lincoln Center honies!
Ticket prices and performance times vary. David H. Koch Theatre, 20 Lincoln Center Plaza, NY, NY. …

Pumps and a Bump
A new monthly event at The Cock

When I first saw the name Pumps &/A Bump, I imagined myself railing coke off a Louboutin. Nothing I have read or heard about this party since has made that image any less likely. Hosted by Richard Kennedy, this new monthly starts tonight, June 10, at The Cock and is guaranteed to get “REAL good and REAL nasty.” The poster for the event is straight-up confusing, which I think is a good sign.
The Cock remains one of the last “anything goes” gay bars in the city, so get ready to get seedy and sweaty and just about anything you want. DJs Calore and BUDDAH FUNKENSTEIN’s Soundclouds are promising, with genre hashtags ranging from ‘Funk’ to ‘House’ to ‘Squirting.’ I’m literally bouncing to Funkenstein as I write this and I’m definitely not mad about it. But here’s the thing, as I said the party is tonight (Wednesday) so read quick, locate your best tearoom attire ASAP, and prepare to get a little sticky — it’s humid out there boys.
$5, 11:00PM, The Cock, 29 Second Ave. New York, NY. …

Alan Cumming Sings Sappy Songs

Raise a martini, grab your kerchief, and search for a sugar daddy, Alan Cumming Sings Sappy Songs, calls for all three. Debuting at Café Carlyle from June 2nd until June 13th for $100 a pop, Alan Cumming’s performance covers a slew of songs and personal stories from Billy Joel and Miley Cyrus to family trauma and emotional strife. Despite the seriousness intermingled with his theatrics, Cumming remains the provocative, occasionally insane pansexual you know and love.
Co-host of the latest Tony’s, Cumming is now joined on stage by a pianist, cellist, and drummer to entertain his increasingly intimate crowd. Covering Broadway and contemporary Pop alike, he runs the full, flaming gambit in his Cumming cabaret fashion. But if you haven’t yet picked up on the purpose of this post or the puns there in, let me lay it out flat: Cum, come, come to Alan Cumming Sings Sappy Songs before it’s too late.
$100-120, 8:45PM & 10:45PM, Café Carlyle, 35 East 76th Street at Madison Ave. New York, NY. …

Violet Chachki’s “Bettie” Needs a Spank
Drag Race winner releases debut music video

Now that this season of RuPaul’s Drag Race is over, I have a confession to make: I had a hard time coming around to Violet Chachki. She turned out pitch-perfect looks all season, fully owned her self-confident bitch persona, and still, something didn’t click for me. She wasn’t as covertly nasty as the older queens, nor as anonymous and overeager as some of the younger ones, but there was just something missing to me that made winners of the past stand out. That was, of course, until that excellent leather and lace challenge, which seemed custom-made for Violet — the corset was cinched, the thong was on, the gag was in, and bitch was living. It was a turning point, and made me fall head over heels for her.
So to see that Miss Chachki has released a leather-themed music video for her debut single “Bettie” in the wake of her coronation is something of a cherry on top of a weird but ultimately satisfying season of Drag Race. “Bettie” is your typical electronic fare, with Violet intoning sultrily over a pounding, snappy beat. “Daddy needs a walk, Bettie needs a spank,” she cries, a fleet of cute men and boys coming through Violet’s house (and walking right past her “husband”) to take part in a fun bit of dungeon-y S&M. It’s certainly the best of the songs this season’s Drag Race queens have been putting out en masse, and the video comes with a healthy supply of jockstraps, leather, and bulges, of course. …
