The Bathhouse Hornbook

A new zine written and illustrated by artist Michael Wynne

After a long day of work bestowed upon us from bosses or professors, all some of us want to do is curl up with a real good book. I know I am not alone when I say over the course of the workweek, I am expected to read a lot of nonsense, so when choosing my recreational reads, something like a fantastic zine is always first choice. Zines and art books alike are often witty, short, colorful, uncensored, thought-provoking, etcetera. Here is where I introduce Michael Wynne“author of some books, maker of some cards and wrapping paper, lover of men.” See? Witty and short.

Wynne lives in London and has been creating zines for nearly three years now. His most recent, The Bathhouse Hornbook, will be launched at the New York Art Book Fair coming up this weekend, September 18-20. “The Bathhouse Hornbook is a light-hearted poetic introduction to men and their behaviour in the bathhouse. An A-Z of the people you’ll find and the things you can do in the sauna.”

“The story is built around a young man’s first visit to the sauna and his more experienced guide. Alongside 26 illustrations depicting the letters of the alphabet, the book aims to entertain and instruct, to take stock and to caution, to be mildly serious and boldly lighthearted.”  — I’ve never been to a bathhouse so though I’m taking notes for my actual college courses, I’ll gladly take some bathhouse notes, and I suggest you do too. …

Art: Photoville

Here’s something fun to do over the weekend while it’s still nice outside. There’s a pop-up photography village in Brooklyn Bridge Park called Photoville. Exhibitions are housed in 65 shipping containers spread across the park. There’s two exhibitions that really caught my eye. First is Misha Friedman’s “The Iron Curtain” (pictured) which documents how “Russian LGBT youth live in a country that vilifies homosexuality.” It’s a very important collection of photos that have even been recognized by the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting. Second is Jeff Sheng’s “Fearless” which features 200 LGBT student athletes between 2003-2015. “The series was just published as a personal memoir and photography book with an afterword essay by retired NBA basketball player Jason Collins.” Along with these amazing exhibitions there’s so much more going on in the park during Photoville’s two week run. There’s nightly “outdoor projection programs; site-specific works; tents with vendors, publishers and gear demonstrators, panel discussions, talks and workshops; and a food & beer garden by Smorgasburg and Brooklyn Brewery.” Sounds hot.

FREE, 12:00pm-8:00pm, Brooklyn Bridge Park, BK NY, .

Party: Wrecked pres. Wolfgang Tillmans w/ Michael Magnan & Sean B.

So apparently it’s NY Fashion Week, yeah I know, weird right? I’m still hungover and covered in sand from last weekend — I have no idea how I’m going to pull myself together for all the upcoming parties. Maybe I won’t! Maybe I’ll just watch Netflix in bed all week and save myself for Saturday for the latest edition of Wrecked. This is a special one. The legendary artist Wolfgang Tilmans (pictured) is DJing along with the Wrecked crew (Ryan Smith + Ron Like Hell), Michael Magnan and Sean B. Hosts include Ashton Anders, Michael Bullock and Stewart Uoo. Wrecked parties are always a lot of fun. Expect a lot of dancing, lots of boys, sweat, bodies, booze, poppers…the usual suspects. Come early, stay late. Fuck fashion week and retarded PR white girls with bad attitude, this is the only party you need to be at! Click here for advance tickets.

$5-10, 10:00PM, Good Room, 98 Meserole Ave. Brooklyn, NY.

Jack Early’s Life Story In Just Under 20 Minutes

We learned about the artist Jack Early in December 2014 after we saw his showcase of a bright and bold new body of work at Art Basel Miami Beach. He was honored as one of the festival’s Top 10 shows. Shortly after, we contacted him to do a feature in our second issue of GAYLETTER (which you must read), and had us over for some Whiskey and beers. Oh and a nice selection of cheeses. He’s a very sexy “daddy,” and an amazing host with a great sense of humor. We can’t wait to get invited again — even though he’s not single.

For today’s event (Sept. 11) at Printed Matter, he’ll be flipping through a collage of images as he tell us his life story — “the images are funny,” he told me. There was a yellow victrola at his show in Miami that looped a song about his story; he’ll be playing the same as he does tonight’s slide show. “I always thought it would be something if I could tell my whole life story from beginning to now. So I decided to do it. I got together a trumpet, a banjo and a bass, a clarinet, some drums and a pump organ. I told my story as the band played. I put it on a yellow vinyl record and I called the whole thing ‘Jack Early’s Life Story In Just Under 20 Minutes.’”

He recently did a talk at Fire Island Art Residency in Cherry Grove — it was an amazing time. …

Event: Bushwig 2015

This is the 4th annual festival of Drag in Bushwick, Bushwig. It’s a super creative and brilliant event with over 100 performers that celebrates the “whole spectrum of drag, performance and queer music.” You will seriously see things you’ve never seen before. If you want to be able to say you’ve seen original drag queens, then this is a place for you to go. I would say that the only thing similar to this that exists in NYC is Wigstock, which was an outdoor drag festival that happened in the 1980s in Manhattan’s East Village — there’s an amazing documentary about it, google it, you must watch that too. So back to this event which sounds, cray cray, “The main event is all ages and being held outdoors. Friday night there will be a special Bushwig ball that will crown Mz. Bushwig 2015 and a secret afterparty will be held on the Saturday night...” Check their Facebook page for updates. Some of the highlights include: BBQ, Crafts, Photo Booth, Lady Bunny, No Bra, Macy Rodman, Chae Buttuh, Eartheater and Bushwick’s very own Horrochata, Babes Trust, Untitled Queen, Merrie Cherrie (Dragnet) & Cherry Pepsi, plus, a live performance by Bottoms and so much more...

$40 ALL WEEKEND, 2:00PM, BUSHWIG, 18-20 Flushing Ave. Ridgewood, NY.

Richard Haines Opening Reception

The artist's latest show 'A Room of One’s Own' is now on view at Daniel Cooney Fine Art in NYC

We’ve been fans of the artist Richard Haines’ work way before he got famous in the fashion industry — Seriously, he’s been on our radar long before he started drawing for the New York Times’ T magazine, and collaborating on T-shirts with Prada. We even posed naked for him because we liked his drawings that much (hopefully we can find that drawing and we can get it as a gift for Christmas). We both have artwork by him on our walls, Richard has been a great supporter of our newsletter, he even covered one of our newsletters (letter No.115) with illustrations (I am so gonna print that newsletter and frame it now that I think of it!).

We did a feature in our printed publication (GAYLETTER Issue 2) about his process and more specifically about drawing naked Brooklyn boys. Basically I don’t need to read a press release about this new show to recommend it.

The show is titled A Room of One’s Own and it’s opening on September 10th at 6:00PM at Daniel Cooney Fine Art gallery in Chelsea. I can assure you the it’s gonna be filled with boys he’s drawn, fashion kids, friendly faces and lots of great art on the walls.

Do: Riis Beach

Take the day off work and head to Jacob Riis Beach in Queens for a day of sun and sand, large naked lesbians, hot Latinos with giant subwoofers, fresh made cocktails hand-delivered by sketchy looking dudes and hot hipster boys in speedos as far as the eye can see. We have visited the beach the last two weekends in a row (with our friend Charlie) and couldn’t recommend it more highly. Fuck Fire Island, fuck the Hamptons, Riis is where it’s at. It’s close enough to Brooklyn and the city that it makes day trips ridiculously easy. The water is perfect, the crowd is as diverse as it gets and the cruising is bananas. The beach is long, but the spot to be at is in front of the abandoned mental hospital (lol) on your left, if you’re facing the water. It’s the perfect backdrop to the rowdy crowd that take over the sand. Be careful while you’re there the cops love to find any opportunity to write tickets, mainly for drinking, or peeing in the long grass. Enjoy those sun rays while we still have them!

FREE, All day, Jacob Riis Park, 157 Rockaway Beach Blvd. Rockaway Park, NY.

Event: MoMA PS1 Warm-Up

I hate talking like this, but it is what it is — summer is nearly over. I know, I don’t like to think about it either, but at least if we’re aware of it, we can take advantage of every warm day we have left. Which is why we suggest you take the opportunity to attend the last Warm-Up for the season. It’s a good one! Closing out the series is the Long Beach rapper Vince Staples (he's so hot! pictured) along with electronic musicians Derrick May, Clark, Dan Bodan and Season. It’s a long weekend, and it’s the last one so the crowd is probably going to go HAM. Sneak in some booze to avoid the long lines at the bar, and wear a diaper to avoid the long lines at the porta-potties. If you’re anything like us you somehow missed every Warm-Up until now. Not to fear, they saved the best till last. See you there homo!

$18, 12:00PM, MoMA PS1, 22-25 Jackson Ave. Long Island City, NY.

Party: BRUK OUT! A QUEER BASHMENT

Yo Yunique! Thanks for your email. I got it. Yunique wanted us all to know about this party she’s putting together with Neon Christina, and Tygapaw (Fake Accent). Yunique is “a queer female identified Jamaican artist living in NYC. I’m apart of a collective with 2 other Jamaican queers labeled “Bruk 0ut!” An organization  focused on elevating the Caribbean culture within the community.” I am from the Caribbean too, yes Dominicano, so I just got super excited. On their Facebook page the party is described as “a Caribbean Queer Basement For the Massive!” You gotta trust me with this one, this is gonna be a good party. Especially with this line-up of DJS: Juliana Huxtable and Joey Labeija as headliners, then, TYGAPAW, SHYBØI and BattyJack. Don’t come to this party tired or with an attitude, that’s not gonna work. Alright! Loosen up, get ready to get your pussy reset (more about this later), see you there! “Unno Ready?”

$10, 11:00PM, Black Bear Bar, 70 N 6th St. BK, NY.

EAT: SUPERIORITY BURGER

If you read the two star review the New York Times just gave this tiny East Village veggie burger shop, or its glowing review from NY Mag then it may sound like we’re jumping on the bandwagon by writing it up. But before you draw such an offensive conclusion (GAYLETTER doesn’t jump on bandwagons, we create? Build? Lead? them, god dammit!) The thing is, I live directly across the street from Superiority Burger, and I’ve become a bit of a regular — the girl at the counter even knows me by name (you knew I was cool, but not THAT cool). My VIP status has given me ample time to form an opinion about the place. So let’s get started. The reaction to this place’s namesake burger has been mixed. Most people seem to think it’s good for a veggie burger but doesn’t come close to competing with the real thing. And that is true. But that’s OK.

For those of us that prefer to clog our arteries with chickpeas instead of ground beef, this is one hell of a veggie burger, and when paired with one of their amazing sides — obsessed with the swiss chard and halloumi, love the burnt broccoli salad with eggplant red chile coriander vin — it’s an even more satisfying meal. Whether the place is worthy of two stars I’ll let you decide. But I’m glad it’s there.

Superiority Burger, 430 E 9th st. open Wednesday-Monday, 6:00-10:00pm …
