Colby Keller by Javier Cortina

Some intimate photographs of everyone's favorite porn star

A few months ago the Spain-based photographer Javier Cortina asked us if we wanted to feature an interview with Colby Keller in our printed issue along with new images. We responded that we love Colby, but that we already featured him in GAYLETTER issue 1. But, since we can’t get enough of Colby, we told Javier that we’d like to publish his images on our site.

Javier told us more about how this shoot came about: “Colby and I are in contact since 2014 hoping to find the time to match and to collaborate together. This past May he came to Barcelona (Spain) for the recording of a porn movie and he gave me some of his little free time to shoot some photos in my studio. I’m grateful for that…Colby transmits a special magnetism, has a classical and sculptural body. The Perfect match for work with any kind of light.”

His peen looks good too. We figured you guys would enjoy these photographs…You’re welcome!

Performance: Billy Lloyd at Joe’s Pub

London-based queer electronic musician and vocalist Billy Lloyd is back in NYC for a performance at Joe’s Pub at The Public Theater, one of our favorite places to see shows. When Earl Dax interviewed Billy for GAYLETTER he used the pronoun “he” but I just noticed on the Public Theatres’ site they use “they.” I don’t know which one I should use, so I’m not going to use either. I’ll just call Billy, Billy. In 2014  2014, Billy released Billy’s first self-produced EP ‘Who ( / ).' Cut to 2016 and Billy has released ‘Who ( /// )’ the 3rd instalment in the trilogies of EPs. Billy’s music is very relaxing. It’s introspective and often very haunting. Billy’s cover of David Bowie’s ‘Heroes’ is like floating on a cloud with an IV of Xanax in the arm. Billy is performing for one night only. We suggest you go see Billy. It’ll be good for your blood pressure!

$12, 9:00PM, JOE’S PUB AT The Public Theater, 425 Lafayette St. NY, NY.

Fair Weather Porn Star: A Conversation with Lev Ivankov

Porn star Lev Ivankov grew up in a small Russian orphanage until the age of 2 when he was adopted by a Canadian family. After jokingly telling his grandmother that he wanted to be a porn star, he realized it wasn’t such a crazy idea and quickly sent out an application. 2 hours later his career had begun. After a 6 month hiatus from porn due to a boyfriend who wasn’t thrilled with the job choice, Lev had a short-lived comeback as an exclusive model for CockyBoys. He has only recently decided to retire again. We first met Lev at our Edmund White photo shoot for issue 4 of GAYLETTER. He was equal parts cute, sweet and interesting, so naturally we wanted to know more.

What was it like filming your first scene? My first scene was an exclusive scene for Cockyboys with Allen King. It was so stressful, the producer told me to be the the top and I was like, “Omg I will never be a top with that guy. It’s Allen King, he is so much more experienced than me in the industry.” Then I chose to be the bottom. The last time I was topped by a guy had been 1 year before the scene. I had so much trouble with the douche. [laughs] It took 2 days of filming and the scene was never even finished.

How did you meet the Cockyboys? Videoboys was the first company I signed with but I had also worked with Cockyboys too. …

Event: Tribute to Willi Ninja at Bronx Museum

This event sounds super duper lovely. It’s a celebration to the life of Willi Ninja, one the people who, if he didn’t start the Vogue movement, he certainly brought it to the attention of the rest of the world. Willi who died in 2006 at the age of 45 was the head of the House of Ninja. His house was more than just a collection of performers, it was a home to all kinds of talented kids who had nowhere else to go. The generous and nurturing father figure is who Willi should be most remember as. This Friday night the The Bronx Museum of the Arts will host a night of celebration for Willi. “Various DJs will provide music, a photo/video montage will be screened, a performance by the NYC Chapter of the Legendary House of Ninja followed by a brief awards ceremony will take place hosted by some of Willi’s beloved dance and fashion family.” The organizers tell us that Willi’s “memory lives on in each of us who aspire to greatness despite the challenges we all face.” I couldn’t have said it any better than that.

FREE, 6:00PM, Bronx Museum of the Arts, 1040 Grand Concourse New York, NY.

AFROPUNK Festival Brooklyn 2016

Alpha, Beta, Omega

A solo show by Zak Krevitt

As the boring little white boy that I am, I’m all for learning about new kinks and fetishes. Although I’ve heard about the Human Puppy community in passing, I’ve never really been exposed to much about it which is why Zak Krevitt’s new solo show, Alpha, Beta, Omega at Ray Gallery in Brooklyn looks so fascinating.

Krevitt is a Brooklyn-based photographer whose art focuses on the inner workings of Queer people. The show explores the “Puppy Play” community both in and out of their gear, many of whom still adhere to the pack-like structure consisting of an Alpha, Beta, and Omega member. Hence the name of the exhibition. “In ‘Alpha, Beta, Omega.’ this act of becoming something more than human is examined, as is the burgeoning community surrounding it. We are on the cusp of the cyborg age, and here individuals have taken it upon themselves to strip away their human flesh and replace it with the imaged fur of a canine.”

The exhibition features 25 photographs and a site-specific installation that’s bound to intrigue, entice, and even titillate. Who knows, maybe by the end of the night you’ll be asking around for the nearest leather store.

Below is a preview of the show:

Film: The Birth of Saké

If you are a big fan of Saké, like me, this documentary might interest you. This is an advance screening of the film, co-presented with the Center for Asian American Media (CAAM), before it airs to the public on PBS. It’s followed by Q&A with the producer Masako Tsumura at the Asia Society New York. The film was directed by the NYC filmmaker Erik Shirai, he was a cinematographer for the Travel Channel series No Reservations with Anthony Bourdain. The description goes like this: “Go behind the scenes at Japan’s Yoshida Brewery, where a brotherhood of artisans, ranging from 20 to 70, spend six months in nearly monastic isolation as they follow an age-old process to create saké, the nation’s revered rice wine.” This doc seems promising, I read good things about it —  it won “Special Jury Mention for Best Documentary Director, at the 2015 Tribeca Film Festival.” I go nuts and bananas for Saké, specially if it’s hot. Can’t wait to see how the real shit is made!

FREE, RSVP: Patrons@AsiaSociety.org or call 212-327-9302, 6:00PM, ASIA SOCIETY , 725 Park Ave NY, NY.

Party: TORTURA SUNDAY SPIRAL EDITION

I’ve always liked the name of the location for this party: “Secret Project Robot Art Experiment.” She’s nuts and bananas! Which is fitting for this party as it is also a little nuts and bananas...in the best possible way. “Come celebrate the end of summer with: BBQ + Happi hour until 7pm, cheap drinks all day and empanadas from the Empanada Lady.” Music is by some of our favorite people from around the world. There’s Abby, Bebe, Habibio, Mungo and DJ DJ DeSe. Secret Project is moving locations so this is the last chance you’ll likely have to party there. And as mentioned this is also the last Tortura party for the summer! They have a great backyard which will be open all night. There’s a million hosts listed for this event so I have a feeling it’s gonna be lit. Get outside and enjoy this nice weather while we still have it queen!.

FREE, 5:00PM, Secret Project Robot Art Experiment, 389 Melrose St Brooklyn, NY.

Event: BOFFO FIRE ISLAND PERFORMANCE FESTIVAL – AUG 26-28

We were in Fire Island last weekend and it was super crowded, that wasn’t a good thing as it’s always more relaxing with less people, but I guess if you don’t have to go to the only supermarket there, or the overpriced wine shop or to the “cafeteria,” then you can prob just chill at your house by the pool and ignore the crowds. I mean it was so basic there, this white man yelled at us because we were complaining that there were too many white generic men on the island: “If you’re gonna talk shit about white people in front of me I have to speak up!” he spat at us. I mean what an idiot. Now that I’ve let that out, I am so glad that this weekend BOFFO is throwing their second annual Fire Island Performance Festival on the island — they really need some culture there. Their program is very good. Some of the performers include Tyler Ashley, Xavier Cha with Rafael Reynoso and Adonis Vasquez, Eartheater, Fluct, Fragile (Wolfgang Tillmans), M. Lamar, Pearl (from RuPaul’s Drag Race), Casey Spooner, Ssion and many more. Expect “a weekend of performance, music, and dance made for the island’s unique social and geographic context.” We’re big fans of Wolfgang Tillman’s work and excited to hear about his “live band project” ‘Fragile’. It was founded in 1983 and will return at the festival 33 years later. It “involves musicians from three continents in varying constellations... I’d say if you are not already there, browse the schedule, take a day trip, bring some greens and try to ignore the basics!

SHE PAPER

The wrapping paper brand putting females first

From now on feel free to judge a gift by its cover. She Paper has introduced an amazing new line of wrapping paper featuring sketches of all of our favorite ladies. The women are grouped together by categories such as “Funny Broads,“Like A Boss Lady,” and “Yas Queen.” The charming drawings are complimented by a thoughtful design aesthetic, making the wrapping paper itself a far better present than the lame gift card you’re giving your friend for her birthday.

I was able to chat with the brains behind the paper about the gendered nature of gift giving and how we can eventually wallpaper the whole world with She Paper:

In the creation story featured on your website you mention some of the life events during which we are expected to gift. While most are gender neutral, there are definitely more events, specifically around weddings and babies, that women are obligated to buy gifts for. How is She Paper in conversation with that obligation? Do women actually like giving gifts more than men, or is this just yet another societal expectation put upon females? The perception that women like gifting more than men may be true, but it’s probably because men buy gifts out of dutiful expectation whereas women see gifting as a creative opportunity to express their feelings. Something we like to do vs. something we must do has led to an over-saturation of gift-giving opportunities. And spending the time, money and effort to give a meaningful present every time can become very stressful. …

PINUPS ISSUE 20 LAUNCH AT PRINTED MATTER, INC.

We have been learning how difficult is to keep a printed publication going since we began creating one of our own 2 years ago. Which is why we do whatever we can to promote other independent printed publications. We’re not talking about Frank Ocean’s latest release ‘Boys Don’t Cry.’ He doesn’t need any help promoting that release.

We’re talking about the latest Pinups. “Pinups is a queer zine—each issue a pictorial of a nude male subject. The zine can be dismembered, and the loose pages tiled to reveal a single, monumental image of the subject. The zine’s two states conflict, resulting in visual and narrative abstraction: a dialogue between its physical structure and its printed content.” Sounds deep, I know, but it’s a beautiful publication/object. Pinups No.20 features Akrum Salem, an actor who is known mainly for his work with Big Freedia. Akrum is a big beefy, hairy daddy, like many of the men featured in the publication. The photos taken focus on “the importance of being in touch with one’s playful side.”

I think embracing playfulness is one of the smartest way to get captivating images. Seriousness gets boring after awhile. You can pre-order the issue right now!

Event: NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM: CLOSING PARTY FOR SUMMER EXHIBITIONS

If it hasn’t set in that summer is ending, bitch, wake up! Labor day is two weeks away and a lot of queens are already wearing Pre-Fall. Sad, I know. But get over it. New magazines are going to hit the shelves soon, and so is some fresh art. To bring their summer exhibits to a proper-close, MoMA PS1 “opens its doors for a late-night celebration of [their] soon-to-close summer exhibitions. One of the city’s most anticipated art events, Night at the Museum will feature special programming organized by artist Meriem Bennani.” I haven’t been to the museum since the Art Book Fair (I worked one day at the fair and was like, OK, I’m good for another year) but with a Warm-Up every weekend and barely any rain all summer, PS1 has been busy. Their long-ass hosting committee for the event is a testament to the museum’s constant hustle: Alan Cumming, Jonathan Horowitz, Ryan McNamara, Cindy Sherman, Laurie Simmons, Alexander Skarsgård, Mickalene Thomas, Klaus Biesenbach and many, many more are included. Should be a fun event. The courtyard is such a great place to chill with a beer or a coconut water, so why not check this out for the night? August’s awful humidity seems to be behind us. Wear pants and finally leave your AC’d apartment!

$18, 8:00PM-12:00AM, MoMA PS1, 22-25 Jackson Ave Long Island City, NY.
